Develop BIM guidelines and specifications for Capital Construction Contracts and Facilities Management.

With the capital budget accounting for between 10% to 20% of the lifetime physical cost of an asset, Carleton University is focused on improving the long-term management of its buildings.
Summit BIM was retained by Carleton University to develop a robust set of BIM Requirements Specifications to enable their FMP team to collect the data they need to operate the buildings as designed, maintain them efficiently and effectively, and contain spiraling maintenance costs.
We undertook a virtual workshop, followed by a series of surveys, targeting different stakeholder groups, providing an initial overview of our findings as to the potential benefits that could be derived, and then, focused on specific challenges and issues relating to the delivery and maintenance of Carleton University capital projects.
Following the workshops, in concert with the University, we developed a BIM Specification comprised of a set of BIM Requirements to support their goals for data use, focusing on easy, digital access to information and improved processes and protocols to facilitate the delivery of capital projects and mitigate risk.
